this afternoon as the first of many funerals are held in newtown, connecticut. the beginning of what will prove to be a parade of ceremonies laying to rest beautiful young children and their dedicated young teachers who became the victims of a senseless and unspeakable act of violence. children like 6-year-old noah pozner, smart as a whip, gentle but rambunctious, mourned by his twin sister ariel who was in a different classroom and survived. jack pinto, also 6, loved skiing, baseball, and football and was a big fan of the new york giants, especially victor cruz. the star receiver wore the boy's name on his cleats and gloves in tribute during the giants game sunday night. as a nation grapples with how and why these many young lives were cut brutally short, it fell to the president in newtown last night to face the impossible task of consoling a town that lay in emotional ruins. >> i can only hope it helps for you to know that the you're not alone in your grief. that our world, too, has been torn apart. that all across this land of ours, we have wept with you. we've pulled our children tight. >>

in this country. now it's up to all of us to make sure changes come to pass. the community of newtown connecticut is still deeply mourning the lives of 26 people, 20 of them children. the president struck an almost impossible balance of heartfelt emotion and out ragrage. the weight of the moment. no american can relive the horror of this. >> we can't tolerate this anymore. these tragedies must end. and to end them, we must change. we will be told that the causes of such violence are complex and that is true. no single law, no set of laws can eliminate evil from the world or prevent every senseless act of violence in our society. but that can't be an excuse for an action. surely we can do better than this. >> this is a moment in history where an event alters the direction of a country and moves lawmakers to unity. dianne feinstein was the first to announce an update on an assault weapons ban which she introduced in congress and will introduce it early next year. >> i intend to introduce a bill. and i intend one way or another, no matter how long it takes, to get that bill through. there's one thin

, in the wake of the newtown shootings, president obama says gun regulation will be, quote, a central issue of his second term. vice president joe biden has been tapped by the president to lead the effort and work with cabinet members on making recommendations before the president's state of the union address. the choice of biden makes sense given his extensive anti-crime portfolio as a long-time delaware senator. he helped to pass a ban on assault weapons in 149. he also received an "f" rating from the nra. he acknowledged that gun legislation alone would not solve the problem. >> we know this is a complex issue that stirs deeply-held passions and political divides. as i said on sunday night, there's no law or set of laws that can prevent every senseless act of violence in our society. we're going to need to work on making access to mental health care at least as easy as access to a gun. we need to look more closely at a culture that all too often glorifies guns and violence. and any actions we must take must begin inside the home and inside our hearts. but the fact that this problem is co

in politics, where emotion will pull the logic train. the emotion of what happened in newtown, connecticut, the emotion contained in a week of funerals, we're at the front of a church or synagogue or a mosque, you're going to be very small -- there are going to be very small caskets. t.j., if we still have the picture of jack pinto buried yesterday in newtown, connecticut, buried in his little league uniform, that right there is what is going to change the dialogue for this. people carry around for years pictures of their children in little league uniforms, hockey uniforms, first and second grade school picture. that's the picture, the emotion that will pull this thing. >> if it doesn't, there's a serious problem. i understand the president does -- has a lot to do, when it comes to making sure that our economy doesn't fall off the cliff. there are tens of millions of working americans that know that the fiscal cliff situation needs to be addressed. isn't human nature funny, though, how we need to get moving on this? >> those critical issues you just mentioned, they seem so insignificant. >
